Titopati – The Parliamentary Hearing Committee (PHC) on Monday unanimously endorsed acting Chief Justice Om Prakash Mishra as the next Chief Justice of the Supreme Court. He will be the Chief Justice until January 1, 2019.
Mishra will officially assume the office after taking the oath of office and secrecy from President Bidya Devi Bhandari.
The Constitutional Council on August 23, 2018 had recommended Mishra for the top post of judiciary.
He has been taking the charge of the Supreme Court as the acting Chief Justice since August 5, 2018 after the PHC rejected the nomination of senior Justice Deepak Raj Joshee as the Chief Justice.
The PHC rejected Joshee’s nomination as Chief Justice saying that he failed to give satisfactory answers to questions posed by lawmakers about his conduct, integrity and capability in the PHC meeting. Later, he went on a 15-day leave without resigning from his post.
Four complaints were registered against Mishra with five accusations. However, one of the complainants withdrew his complaint.
Mishra was appointed as the Justice of the Supreme Court on May 27, 2014. He will retire on January 1, 2019 on age ground.
